Old Fishing Pier

Ocean City Pier Old Fishing PierFor a number of years I have traveled every summer to the area encompassing Ocean City Maryland and Fenwick Island Delaware. The area is rich in history as well as photogenic subjects. Near the pictured pier is an amusement park called Trimpers Amusements that has captivated my kids for years. Each time I’ve gone to Trimpers, I’ve seen this pier and imagined a variety of images that I might create to reflect my vision.

On this early morning, my son and I, the other aspiring photographer in the family, arrived just before sunrise and got into position. The number of people wandering, sleeping and playing on the beach at this hour has always amazed me. When do they sleep? I set this shot up in a position to capture the sunrise in the clouds as well as the constant motion of the water. I used a tripod mounted camera with a 10 stop ND filter on a a 24-105mm lens. The ND filter allowed me to use a longer shutter speed to smooth out the motion in the water.

The 5 RAW files for this image were processed in Apple Aperture, converted to HDR in Nik’s HDR Efex Pro and then converted to Black & White  and toned in Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2.
