Industrial HDR Photo Processing
There are so many cool things you can do when working on photos of old stuff using an industrial HDR photo processing approach. In this case I envisioned that approach when I shot several photos of the inside of some old railroad cars at the Southeastern Railway Museum located in Duluth, GA.
This photo of a railroad galley car lends itself perfectly to an industrial HDR photo processing approach. The iron stove, metal walls and exhaust hoods have accentuated detail and texture when processed using HDR.

Railroad Galley Car
This old stove, complete with iron skillets is perfect for an industrial HDR photo processing look. Converting it to black and white adds to the aged look I was trying to achieve when I composed the image.

These faucets in the dishwashing area of a dining car have a vintage look when processed with an industrial HDR method. Again, converting to black and white also enhances the feel of the photo.

All the photos shown here were taken in 3 shot brackets with a Fuji X-Pro 1 and the XF18mm lens. The sets were processed in Lightroom, HDR Efex Pro 2 and the last 2 images were converted to black and white using Silver Efex Pro 2.

Vintage Railroad Cars
There’s something about the styles found in the old days. Vintage railroad cars are no exception. On a recent trip to the Southeastern Railway Museum, I came across a number of old cars that had some details that you just don’t see anymore in today’s mass produced products (with the exception of Apple, of course). These cars were built by craftsmen that took genuine pride in what they produced.
The detail in the ceiling of this vintage railroad car caught my eye as I walked through it. The styling of the overhead lights makes this car a classic.

Attention to detail can be seen in the ceiling of this car
The following vintage railroad car has some seriously funky colors going on when they assembled it. I’m pretty confident you won’t find colors like these anywhere in our current era!

Have some color!
This is just a sampling of what you’ll find at the Southeastern Railway Museum. There’s a great deal of opportunity to shoot photos of many different era’s in railroading.

Railroad History
The Southeastern Railway Museum is located in Duluth, Georgia in northeast Atlanta. Started in 1970, the museum has over 90 pieces of rolling stock including historic Pullman cars and classic locomotives.
The rolling stock on site represents some serious railroad history. While there were a number of different locomotives to shoot, I really liked the look of this tired looking locomotive.

There’s also a number of different types of historic rail cars in a variety of states of restoration.

Old Charlottesville Railway Car
I especially like the old Pullman cars. Back in the day, they were pretty hip looking rail cars with different colored upholsteries and colored tile on the floors. There are many different layouts featured at the museum like the one pictured below.

The equipment at the museum is perfect for HDR photography as well as the application of vintage film pre-sets in the processing steps. Each of these shots was a sequence of 3 bracketed shots processed in Nik’s new HDR Efex Pro 2. I applied the appropriate HDR method then chose one of HDR Efex Pro 2′s vintage film pre-sets. The photos were then processed through Nik Color Efex Pro 4 to boost contrast using the Pro Contrast pre-set.

Tracks
I like the history that can be found when wandering the Old Town area of Suwanee, Georgia. These tracks run through the area known as Pierce’s Corner. I had the Fuji X100 with me and the potential of shooting the tracks and having a final image in Black & White appealed to me.
I shot the tracks horizontally with the intention of having the rails leading my eye right out of the frame. The image was processed in Aperture and Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro 2.
